Three Minute Thesis
As part of my participation in the Three Minute Thesis Competition at uWaterloo, we had to choose a single slide to represent our thesis (and present it in under 3 minutes). I decided to use one of the first plots I did of the GPS data collected from the uWaterloo Pedestrian Traffic Map study that I completed late last year.
Curious to see how the event goes down tomorrow.

uWaterloo Pedestrian Traffic Map
As part of my participation on the uWaterloo New Student Services Building Project Committee, I ran a research study to collect GPS points from students on campus over a 2 week period at the end of last term.
To do this we developed, tested and launched a custom built mobile application in 3 weeks. Students downloaded the app, filling out information about themselves, such as their faculty and expected year of graduation, and then let it run the background over the study period. By leveraging uWaterloo's social media presence as well as via word of mouth, videos, and an informative website, we had 367 students log 382,200 GPS points, which exceeded our goal of 1% participation of the student body.
To communicate results of this study, in the form of maps of campus, I developed an interactive html5 web app (see below or visit site here) that allows users to plot the GPS data in various ways. This tool allows stakeholders of all technical abilities to engage and use the data to make more informed decisions.
This "map app" shows how data can be made accessible and actionable to all stakeholders. My inspiration for this was from a project my friend Matt did which allowed a client to design their own suspended ceiling (here).
I'm interested to hear any comments or suggestions!

Vox Populi
Realized I hadn't posted this installation yet...
It was done by co.labs for the Mayors Celebration of the Arts in Cambridge this summer.

Poster for M1 - Publication
I finally got around, after much cajoling by Shane and Virgina, to completing my poster for the M1 Studio's publication!!
I opted for modifying the z-axis to be "time" versus altitude... in this case the x- and y-axis become latitude and longitude in the vein of a Couchy Surface.

Submarine Cables
An amazing interactive website documenting all the submarine fibre-optic cables which create the "scaleless", "fluid" internet... those visualization of the internet as this abstract series of nodes is highly deceptive, as the internet is at every moment travelling back and forth across these cables as pulses of light: a highly concrete phenomena (if light can be said to be concrete... but you know what I mean)

Genetic Shapes
Premise: Start with the most simple relationship: a doubling, from that thought, a massive polar iteration seeking to arrive at a sphere through a multiplicity: to arrive at an approximation of a perfect point, a black dot via a process of infinite complexity, as opposed to unity. This is sphere as the most complex shape: through intense iteration and inextricable interaction.
Eventually, as I have over 6000 lines, strange optical effects reminiscent of the corona's of the sun begin to appear. At further iteration the blackened centers continues to grow larger.
The first image is how I began. The rest of the images are out-of-order, but the hierarchy of complex vs. non.complex should be seen. I started with an exponentially decreasing fractal.

Human Migration 200-5 Ka
Made this map of the Migration of Homo Sapiens over the last 200,000 years (200 Ka) on a dymaxion projection:

I hope to eventually add the data from the last 5000 years, showing major migrations within that time period (Spanish Empire, British Empire, Hun's pushing West, etc)... but need to find a clear way of representing that.
