Borges - To the Son

It was not I who begot you.  It was the dead --
my father, and his father, and their forebears,
all those who through a labyrinth of loves
descend from Adam and the desert wastes
of Cain and Abel, in a dawn so ancient
it has become mythology by now,
to arrive, blood and marrow, at this day
in the future, in which I now beget you.
I feel their multitudes.  They are who we are,
and you among us, you and the sons to come
that you will beget.  The latest in the line
and in red Adam’s line.  I too am those others.
Eternity is present in the things
of time and its imaptient happenings.

-AR.  Borges. To the Son.

Kunstformen der Natur

(German for Art Forms of Nature) is a book of lithographic and autotype prints by German biologist Ernst Haeckel. Originally published in sets of ten between 1899 and 1904 and as a complete volume in 1904, it consists of 100 prints of various organisms, many of which were first described by Haeckel himself.

Blue Lobster

from CBC:
"A fisherman hauled an extremely rare blue lobster out of the waters off P.E.I.'s North Shore Wednesday.
Blair Doucette landed the lobster in North Rustico. Only about one in four million lobsters is blue. The colour is caused by a genetic mutation.
Wendy Doucette, Blair's wife, told CBC News in 30 years of fishing he has never seen a blue lobster. They are considering donating the lobster to a local aquarium.
The last blue lobster reported caught off P.E.I. was in 2009."

Spermatozoon

A spermatozoon joins an ovum to form a zygote. (A zygote is a single cell, with a complete set of chromosomes, that normally develops into an embryo.) The term spermatozoon comes from the ancient Greek word σπέρμα (seed) and ζῷον (living being).

Spring Proposal

Once a Year, during Summer Solstice day, the entire neighbourhood gathers in a park. Everyone gets a handful of wild flowers and branches, and they go on a parade, convivially laying a branch and a wildflower upon the doorstep of every home as a sign of goodwill to all.

Returning to the park after the sacralization of the neighbourhood, there is a night time Park Party (ACDC, Jay-Z, Biebs, and Cher are the headliners this year, and we have a liquor liscense this time!!!1)

Aeolian processes

"Aeolian (or Eolian or Æolian) processes pertain to the activity of the winds and more specifically, to the winds' ability to shape the surface of the Earth and other planets. Winds may erode, transport, and deposit materials, and are effective agents in regions with sparse vegetation and a large supply of unconsolidated sediments. Although water is a much more powerful eroding force than wind, aeolian processes are important in arid environments such as deserts."

Below are the Wind-carved alcove in the Navajo Sandstone near Moab, Utah.  But first!

Here is how sandstone is formed:

"The formation of sandstone involves two principal stages. First, a layer or layers of sand accumulates as the result of sedimentation, either from water (as in a river, lake, or sea) or from air (as in a desert). Typically, sedimentation occurs by the sand settling out from suspension; i.e., ceasing to be rolled or bounced along the bottom of a body of water (e.g., seas or rivers) or ground surface (e.g., in a desert or erg). Finally, once it has accumulated, the sand becomes sandstone when it is compacted by pressure of overlying deposits and cemented by the precipitation of minerals within the pore spaces between sand grains."

So... the Wind is eroding the cliff, which is itself composed of eroded rocks (grains of sand I mean) that had by now re-ossified into stone mountains. Goethe said:

"on the beach, I found my first starfish... and some curous pebbles.  Limestone pebbles were the most common, but serpentine, jasper, quartz, granite phorphyry, various kinds of marble and green-blue glass... these can hardly have come from this region and are most probably fragments from ancient buildings.  Thus one can watch the waves playing before one's eyes with the splendoour of an earlier era."

Goethe: what of this cliff?

Coronal Loops

"Coronal loops form the basic structure of the lower corona and transition region of the Sun. These highly structured and elegant loops are a direct consequence of the twisted solar magnetic flux within the solar body. The population of coronal loops can be directly linked with the solar cycle; it is for this reason coronal loops are often found with sunspots at their footpoints. The upwelling magnetic flux pushes through the photosphere, exposing the cooler plasma below. The contrast between the photosphere and the solar interior gives the impression of dark spots, or sunspots." via

10 Billion Particle Universe Simulation

From the Planck Institute's Millenium Simulation.

"The Millennium Run used more than 10 billion particles to trace the evolution of the matter distribution in a cubic region of the Universe over 2 billion light-years on a side. It kept busy the principal supercomputer at the Max Planck Society's Supercomputing Centre in Garching, Germany for more than a month"

For context 1 Mpc/h = Megaparsec.  1 Mpc/H =1,000,000 parsecs.  A parsec is "unit of length, equal to just under 31 trillion (31×1012kilometres (about 19 trillion miles)... or about 3.26 light-years(via).   The line below is therefore about 400,000,000 light years longs.

This contained 10^9 (10,000,000,000) particles.  The human brain has 10^15 (10,000,000,000,000,000) potential synapses.   That is over 1 million times more synapses then particles in this simulation.  .
